HOW IT WORKS

Five minutes from you, then we handle the rest.

Carriers can take a week to process a port. That's mostly out of anyone's hands. What's not out of our hands: making the part you have to do as painless as possible.

1

You upload a recent bill

A PDF or photo of any bill from your current provider in the last 30 days. That's the only thing the carriers need to verify ownership of the number.

2

You sign the LOA in your browser

A Letter of Authorization is required by federal regulation. We pre-fill it from your bill, you click to sign, no printing or scanning.

3

We submit the port

We file the port request with our carrier (Telnyx) and you get a status page showing where it sits. Most ports clear in 5-10 business days.

4

Your old service keeps working

Don't cancel the old line. The port itself is the cancel - the moment your number lights up on TimberSwitch, the old service drops it. Zero downtime if you do it in this order.

5

Set up routing while you wait

You can build out extensions, voicemail boxes, IVR menus, and webhooks during the port window. The minute the number arrives, your routing is already running.

6

Done

Your customers call the same number they always have. The phone just rings somewhere modern now.

QUESTIONS WE HEAR A LOT

The honest answers.

Is there a port-in fee?

No. Bringing your number to TimberSwitch is free. We don't charge for the port and we don't charge a setup fee.

Will my number stop working during the port?

No, as long as you don't cancel your old service early. The port itself triggers the handoff - the old service drops the number the same minute we light it up. Zero downtime in normal cases.

How long does it take?

5-10 business days for most US ports. Toll-free numbers can take a few extra days. Carriers run the schedule; we don't get to override it. We do tell you exactly where the port sits in real time.

What if my current provider needs a portout PIN?

Most do - we'll let you know in the form which fields you need to grab from your account. The FCC made portout PINs mandatory in 2024, so every legitimate provider has them. (We do, too - see /account/portout-pin once you're signed up.)

What if the port fails?

Sometimes carriers reject a port - usually because the address on the bill doesn't match what they have on file, or because the account is in a billing dispute. We'll tell you exactly what came back, and you can either fix it on the old provider's side or get a brand-new TimberSwitch number while you sort it out.

Can I port multiple numbers at once?

Yes - and we recommend it if you have a few. Carriers process them in a single batch, which usually means fewer days waiting and fewer chances for something to go sideways mid-stream.
